Lipids
Synthetic lipids offer exciting opportunities for drug delivery with unique pharmaceutical benefits. One example is drug delivery liposomes, where the ability to self-assemble into vesicles that target drugs to selective tissues, lipids can increase efficacy and therapeutic index, improve pharmacokinetics and solubility as well as reduce toxicity of an associated drug. Others include cell transfection for oligonucleotide delivery (e.g. siRNA, miRNA) and solid lipid particles for pulmonary delivery.
Whether used as an Active Pharmaceutical Ingredient, critical formulation excipient, or part of a lipid delivery system, Genzyme’s comprehensive range of synthetic phospholipids, sphingolipids, cationic lipids, "helper" lipids, and other lipid analogues offers an excellent choice for your drug product development and manufacturing needs.
Synthetically produced lipids have the same structure as their semisynthetic counterparts or those extracted from natural sources, but offer significant advantage to the formulation scientist. Genzyme Pharmaceuticals' synthetic phospholipids and intermediates have consistent batch-to-batch reproducibility and a high-quality product linked to efficient manufacturing processes for large-scale production. As defined single compounds, they carry no risk of contamination from undetected biological impurities which occur in natural lecithin starting material. Our phospholipids are purified by recrystalization and all starting materials are fully characterized; they can be systematically analyzed for all theoretical impurities and degradation products.
Genzyme's expertise in lipid chemistry has been widely used by customers seeking development and manufacture of a novel lipid or lipid conjugate for pharmaceutical use. Customers also take advantage of our custom peptide manufacturing skill to produce peptide conjugates (lipo-peptides).
We look forward to the opportunity to discuss these capabilities relative to your particular project needs.
